The First One

I don't remember the first book I ever read. I have a vague notion it was something about a horse, and it was sometime in first grade because it came from the library at my school. I DO remember keeping a list, or atleast taking notes back to my teacher, and her giving me a star sticker to put on a chart. I'll never forget the first week of second grade, when I asked my teacher if she wanted a note from my parents to verify that I'd read the night before. Her answer shocked me so, that I've never forgotten it. She told me not to bother, that parents would lie for their kids, so she never asked for such from her students. My mom was outraged! To think that a teacher would undermine her authority so, specially when I was so young...
